How manual medicine works

Manual therapy (physiotherapy), osteopathy and chiropractic examine and treat disorders, restricted mobility and pain in the musculoskeletal system (muscles, joints, nervous system, spine, extremities). All three methods of manual medicine aim to restore the mobility of a joint that is usually painfully restricted. The treating orthopaedist uses osteopathic or manual therapy methods for this, and the treatment is carried out using his hands and various massage techniques.

Although the treatment forms of manual therapy, osteopathy and chiropractic therapy are similar, they use different orthopaedic methods:

  • Our chiropractors in Berlin systematically examine the entire musculoskeletal system (from top to bottom) for existing restrictions (subluxations) and use gentle, fast and targeted chiropractic impulse techniques to release restrictions and blockages.
  • In manual therapy, the joints are mobilized gently and slowly.
  • As osteopaths for Zehlendorf and the surrounding area, we have an eye for the big picture: in our special osteopathic treatment concepts, we include functional disorders of joints, muscles and nerves and relate the movement restriction (dysfunction) to internal organs, fascia and the craniosacral system.

The best way to find out which form of manual medicine will alleviate your symptoms is to make a personal appointment at Dr. Topar’s orthopaedic practice.

In our orthopaedic practice in Berlin Zehlendorf, we offer all three treatment methods for private patients and self-paying patients. For optimum treatment success, the experienced orthopaedists combine the best of manual therapy, chirotherapy and osteopathy (parietal, visceral & craniosacral osteopathy) and use the most effective method or an effective combination of several forms of treatment to treat your individual complaints and limitations – also in conjunction with conventional medicine.

We recommend osteopathy, chirotherapy or manual therapy for

  • Blockages of joints in the shoulder, back, neck or hip
  • Painful tension and muscle stiffness
  • Misalignments of the body that cause movement restrictions
  • Therapy of tension-induced headaches, dizziness, sleep disorders, etc.

In addition to adult patients, the majority of our specialists with specialist training also treat children and adolescents: Pediatric osteopathy for newborns, infants, babies, toddlers and schoolchildren is part of our pediatric orthopaedics department, which is headed by specialist and pediatric orthopaedist Susanne Leidig.

Frequently asked questions

WHAT IS OSTEOPATHY?

Osteopathy is a manual, non-invasive form of treatment that involves the entire organism. Physical complaints are considered and treated in connection with muscles and joints, the internal organs, the cardiovascular system and the nervous system. Osteopathic treatment is an alternative to medical or surgical treatment and generally has fewer possible side effects.

Osteopathic treatment can effectively alleviate and improve pain and restrictions of the musculoskeletal system in cases of acute and chronic back and joint pain, muscle tension and stiffness, incorrect posture and the consequences of tension such as headaches or sleep disorders.

The first step is always a treatment contract and a consultation to discuss the possible causes of your complaints. This is followed by an examination in which your ability to move and coordinate is tested. The osteopath detects irregularities through observation, palpation and tapping. In this way, typical signs of illness can be detected. An individual treatment plan is then drawn up.

Osteopathic treatment usually requires several sessions over a few weeks. In the case of chronic illnesses, this may also be necessary over a longer period of time. Osteopaths have a large repertoire of grips and methods that can be used for various complaints. Treatment is carried out using manual techniques such as adjusting joints, manually moving certain parts of the body, applying gentle pressure and acting on the body’s minimal movements, such as the rhythm of the breath.

Your GP can give you a prescription for osteopathic treatment. In our orthopaedic practice in Berlin Zehlendorf, we treat private patients and self-pay patients with methods of manual therapy, chirotherapy and osteopathy, even without a referral or prescription.
