Podcast episode with Dr. Christopher Topar

Almost a third of the German population suffers from back pain. In 2022, 14% of working people’s days off work were due to back pain, resulting in production downtime costs of 12.4 billion euros. This problem not only affects older people, but also more and more young people due to sedentary activities, obesity and an unhealthy lifestyle. A slipped disc is a particularly painful condition that occurs in around 180,000 people in Germany every year. Our spine is separated by flexible intervertebral discs that act as “shock absorbers”. A slipped disc can lead to localized back pain or even numbness and paralysis in the neck. The exact diagnosis and treatment require the expertise of a specialist. In the current issue of Mission Gesundheit, Dr. Chris Topar, a back specialist and orthopaedic surgeon specializing in sports medicine, chiropractic/manual therapy and acupuncture, reports on the risks, treatment and prevention of herniated discs.
